What UV does, and what it doesn't

UV inactivates susceptible microorganisms as water passes through the chamber, without adding chemicals. It does not remove sediment, hardness, metals or dissolved chemicals, and it won't fix every taste or odour issue. That's why a proper system puts filtration in front of the chamber: particles and cloudiness shield microorganisms from the UV light. A typical whole-house arrangement runs source, sediment filtration, any treatment the water test calls for, then the UV chamber at its designed flow.

The right system for your source

Rainwater carries sediment and microorganisms from the roof, so the catchment, tank, pump and pre-filtration get designed alongside the UV stage. Bore water can look clear while carrying hardness, iron or manganese that need treating first. Surface and mixed supplies change with the weather and usually need a more complete assessment than a standard cartridge-and-UV package. WaterForce designs for the source you actually have, confirmed by testing.

Installation, alarms and servicing

A UV system only protects the supply while it's operating within its design conditions. Lamps lose output over time, sleeves foul and filters load up, and a power cut stops disinfection entirely. We install systems with appropriate alarm or monitoring options, position equipment away from weather and frost, and set up a maintenance plan covering filters, lamp, sleeve and water checks, then service it for you.

Is UV treatment the same as water filtration?

No. Filtration physically removes particles or substances; UV uses light to disinfect. Most household systems need filtration before the UV chamber.

Does UV remove sediment, hardness or chemicals?

No. Those need separate treatment stages selected from a water test.

What size UV system do I need?

One sized for your peak simultaneous flow, water clarity and pipework. We calculate it as part of the system design.

Do I need to test the water first?

Yes, for any private supply. The test identifies what UV can't address and gives the design a baseline.

How often does a UV lamp need changing?

Per the manufacturer's schedule for your unit, typically annually. Lamp output drops well before the lamp stops glowing, so a lit lamp isn't proof of protection.

What happens during a power cut or lamp failure?

Disinfection stops. We can specify systems with alarms or shut-off features so the household knows immediately rather than finding out later.

Can UV be installed in a pump shed or outdoors?

Yes, with suitable protection from weather, moisture, heat, frost and direct sunlight. Location is part of the design.

Will UV fix the taste or smell of my water?

Not usually. Taste and odour issues generally need carbon or specialist filtration matched to the cause, which a test identifies.

Can WaterForce service a UV system installed by someone else?

Yes. We assess the existing unit, pre-filtration and flow, then service or upgrade it as needed.

Is UV worth it on rainwater if the tank looks clean?

Yes. Microbiological contamination isn't visible, and roof-collected water is exposed to birds, vermin and debris. UV plus proper pre-filtration is the standard protection for drinking use.
