Canterbury’s famous Nor’wester is loved by many but provides a unique challenge for farmers and home gardeners across the region.
When the Nor’west wind blows, a distinct arch of high white cloud forms against the clear blue sky over the Southern Alps. Hot, dry winds whip across the flat Canterbury plains (particularly in spring and summer), and will send temperatures soaring as high as 34°C.
Getting the right amount of water onto land during these times is crucial. The region’s dairy, sheep and beef farmers face this constant challenge, as do those who grow crops such as wheat, barley, oats and pasture to feed livestock.
WaterForce supplies Valley pivots and all other irrigation equipment that farmers require to keep water on 24/7. Evapotranspiration (when water is transferred from land to the atmosphere) is a constant risk in Canterbury, so it’s important to calculate exactly how much water is required to keep everything growing.
Our team of experts offer a full irrigation design and installation service that takes into account how exposed your land is, your soil type and what your soil holding capacity is. In addition to centre pivots, we also supply Ocmis Hard Hose Irrigators, WaterForce Folding Booms, K-Line Irrigation, Krohne flow meters, WaterCheck compliance telemetry, SCADAfarm control and monitoring solutions.
We have four WaterForce branches across the Canterbury region located in Rangiora, Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru. From here we help customers as far north as Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs; inland to Lake Coleridge; and as far south as the Mackenzie District and Timaru.
Our main retail store is based in Hornby, Christchurch. From here we supply everything our agriculture customers might need, as well as catering for residential and lifestyle block owners plus commercial and council-owned assets such as parks and sports turfs.
A team of ‘lifestyle designers’ are based in our Christchurch office to help homeowners custom-design and install appropriate irrigation for their gardens. Individual landscapes and environmental conditions are always taken into account so you get exactly the right amount of water where it’s needed.
We sell a full range of solid-set or fixed sprinkler irrigation, Hunter pop-ups and automated controllers, drippers, pond and water feature equipment, plus pumps, tanks and filtration systems to improve the quality of your drinking water. Our main supplier is also based in Christchurch so parts are never far away and readily available!
Each Canterbury branch has a dedicated service team who can be on site within hours if necessary to fix any problems you might have with your pivots, pumps or other equipment.
We regularly work alongside North Canterbury wineries and walnut growers across the region, and also specialise in designing stock-water solutions. We know exactly what size pipes and pumps to install to get the right pressure and volume of water where it needs to be.
Canterbury is blessed with large underground aquifers which are replenished by the Southern Alps. Long braided rivers such as the Rakaia, Waimakariri and Hurunui also run freely, yet drought-like conditions are common.
Our local WaterForce team understand the unique Canterbury climate and landscape and will have the right irrigation solution for you.
